Down the street from me in West Philly is the flyest neighborhood silk screen print shop on the planet*: Reclaim. (Silk screen, kids; look it up.) The homies recently did some shirts for me, and I decided to lace them up with a little mix (ok, a long mix) especially for the shop. (They always got the ill hip-hop playing in there). Yes, the implication is correct: the hip-hop crates in the Ill-Literate Think Pad and Lounge are equally deep. Gramaphone in Chicago**, Access in San Diego--I used to buy lots of local hip-hop joints from these places, and you'll hear some of those recs on this 80min sure shot. Two groups in particular that I used to dig a lot who are on this mix are Typical Cats from Chicago and LA Symphony*** from, uh, LA! Also gotta say peace to the legendary Danny Dan the Beat Mann who passed me doubles of a joint I get silly with at the tail end of this one. Sorry about the cuss words in this one. *But that one in SD where Rock So Fresh get their stuff too is pretty fly! **At about 4 min, you'll hear capital D from All Natural rap "Sittin at the lakefront workin on my next LP/ At 55th and LSD." He's talking about The Point park district in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood. It's on 55th St and Lake Shore Drive. That's where I started breakin'. ***Was at a LA Symph show one night with this shorty doowap back in SD. Homegirl steps out to use the facilities real quick and comes back with two of their 12" singles under her arm. "Here," she says. "I wasn't sure which one you'd like so I got you both." That's a keeper right there, and the Latyrx cut at about 37 min is basically all about her. The SOULution!!!July 08, 2010 01:58 PM PDT
Episode 5 of the ILL Deposition is the jump off teaser for The SOULution joint happening this Saturday upstairs at the legendary Elena's Soul Lounge in West Philly. Yours truly the breakbeat scholar will be controlling the decks along with the Oates to my Hall, the international soul controller himself, DJ Rockdaspot. Also performing live on colors, contours, and canvas will be artist/painter Populart Yin. So if you are anywhere on this so-called planet earth, we suggest you make your way to The SOULution on Saturday night. There shall be clapping of hands and stomping of feet! The SOULution
Of course it's FREE! Episode 4June 04, 2010 07:01 PM PDT
The funk-n-soulaholics finally get their monthly fix with Episode 4 of the Ill Deposition. Big up to A.M. who passed me a monster (and criminally under-priced) track while we were out digging this month, which appears on this episode. Also, big up to all the sukker and digital only DJs who stopped digging. Without you, we'd be nothing, and this episode would be a little less funky. Cheers! April 25, 2010 08:57 PM PDT
After a brief hiatus since Lovers' Rock, the Ill Dep is back like Naughty in '93. As spring is definitely in the air, we start you off with a few feel good joints that conjure up images of the Tar Heel royal lows and summa dresses that are just around the corner. Buuuut, before we get ahead of ourselves, we bring you back to life (and back to reality) with a reminder that there's only so much oil in the ground, and there's only two sides to a city: the one that's cared for and the one that's not.
The ILL Deposition Episode 2: The Lovers' Rock Promo!!! February 01, 2010 12:51 AM PST
Only two weeks away from the flyest hip-hop jam on the planet, this episode of the Ill Dep is to start gettin yall in the mood for the Lovers' Rock Bonnie & Clyde battle coming to Philly on February 13th, Valentine's Eve. (Click here for a lil background on the jam plus the out of towners guide for all the funky aliens visiting this so-called planet earth for the event). At Lovers' Rock, the Mega Powers (Sesion 31 + The 1520 Sedgwick Av. DJs) will keep it a bit more funky and uptempo than this episode, but the vibe here is what counts. So pull the bear skin rug over to the fireplace, pour yourself a glass of shiraz, and cozy up next to your squeeze for this sneak peak into the heart of Lovers' Rock. Big up to my homegirl Chelsea Best (aka West Philly's Flyest) for coming thru on this one. The inaugural episode of the Ill Deposition starts you off deep in the cypher where the funk is heavy and the breaks give you none. But-but-but before you sweat through that mock-neck and start smelling like gym class, we take you over to the Chuckwaggon lounge where the special of the day is hog maws, black eyed peas, sweat potatoes, and collard greens. Check the Ill Deposition blog at www.illdeposition31.blogspot.com to have your mind moved too. |
